CREATE — Tools and Techniques for Drafting Complex Legal Documents with Microsoft Word

Are you tired of wrestling with Word every time you have to draft something more complex than a letter? Do you wish you could control Word's formatting and gain a better understanding of how it works? Do you miss WordPerfect? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, this is your class. Word classes designed for the general public just don't address the issues lawyers face when drafting legal instruments. By contrast, this class is designed by lawyers, for lawyers. We'll cover legal drafting issues such as automatic paragraph numbering, complex page numbering schemes, tables of contents, footnotes, and paragraph number cross-referencing. Not only will you learn how to control Word's complex formatting attributes, but as part of this class you will also receive sample Word templates for pleadings, contracts/agreements, trusts and leases — all with the formatting built in and ready to go.

AUTOMATE — Automation Tools Legal and Drafting Best Practices

Creating new documents from existing ones creates an unacceptably high margin for error. Learn easier, better, and safer ways to draft your documents. We'll demonstrate how to use features already present in Microsoft Word that almost no legal users take advantage of; and how add-in programs can be used to further increase accuracy and speed.

MANAGE — Electronic File Management: Streamline Your Office with Better Document Management

Imagine if you could electronically organize and store all documents (including electronic documents created in-house, documents your office has received, faxes, e-mail, and attachments) in a client/matter-centric manner that is accessible at any time, whether they're in or out of the office. Imagine further that all of those files could be searched by any imaginable criteria and, therefore, nothing could be lost. We'll show you how to make this a reality in your practice.

NEGOTIATE (Ethics) — How to Protect Yourself While Trading Documents Electronically

Today's negotiated instruments are often not reduced to paper until they're ready to be signed. The negotiation occurs electronically with lawyers e-mailing documents (Word or PDF files) to one another (and clients) to indicate changes and proposed modifications. This presentation covers the tools available in Word and Acrobat for safely transmitting documents, comparing versions, tracking changes, and adding comments and other annotations. We'll discuss "locking" a document down to prevent further changes, encryption, avoiding metadata, and other collaboration tools.
